Merge

I think this should be merged into Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors. It isn't a standalone game. I know alot of people have posted on websites like digg saying it was but they still point to the Penn & Teller torrent. Any objections? Manmonk 06:53, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

I just went ahead with that merge, I really home nobody minds. It really did seem stupid to have a standalone entry for a minigame --Thetriangleguy 16:32, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

The podcast date where the game was discussed was 2006.03.01 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.226.230.36 (talk) 17:11, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Platforms

I really don't think all of the platforms should be listed in the blurb... the only platform for which the game was completely finished and playable was Sega CD; having the rest, including the PC version which was only 20% of the way along, isn't really accurate.--Trixter 03:22, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Go for it. Manmonk 14:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Desert Bus Elements

I am not clear on what happens if the bus crashes. Can we get more details on the rules perhaps? For instance: When you crash it says the bus is towed back to Tucsan, but does that mean the game is over? Do you lose points? Is this article covering more about just how boring the game is? — MrBucketT/C 18:09, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

In the "The best part of that I think was an idea..." paragraph, something is missing. The quotation says what it is not, but never says what the idea is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.52.119.89 (talk) 04:22, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Penn and tellers - smoke and mirrors.jpg

Image:Penn and tellers - smoke and mirrors.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Saturn version also originally planned

Apologies if I'm screwing this up, I'm really very new to wikipedia editing. Just thought I should mention that there was also a Sega Saturn on the cards at some point - Promo material made by Absolute Entertainment that was sent to appropriate industry members displays the Sega Saturn name below the Sega CD name, and the Saturn name is also visible in watermark form on the same blurb page (3DO, Sega CD and some sort of CD-ROM logo are also present). I don't want to attempt to alter the main wiki entry myself as I'll probably mess it up, but I'm hoping someone else here will catch this and do it right? I can provide a link to a scan of the page... here it is.

"Best Part" of Desert Bus

From the article: 'Penn says, "The best part of that I think was an idea that was not mine, not Teller’s, and not Barry Marx, who designed the game with us. It was an idea by Eddie Gorodetsky, one of the producers on Two and a Half Men, really funny guy. I think that Eddie G. is one of the funniest guys in the world."'. Okay... it's great to know that the best part was an idea by Eddie Gorodetsky but what WAS the part / idea ? 87.254.93.202 (talk) 22:45, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Just to alleviate the curiosity of future readers, this comment refers to Desert Bus being the best part of the Smoke & Mirrors collection.[1]Smuckola (Email) (Talk) 10:24, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Maximum score

An individual attempted to get the maximum score in Desert Bus, producing a run that lasts 41 days and ~17 hours. Of course, I'm not sure if it's a valid reference: http://tasvideos.org/2211S.html --Sigma 7 (talk) 22:14, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

No, April Fools jokes are not references. — Smuckola (Email) (Talk) 10:24, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

iOS and Android

In the section «Desert Bus» it is mentioned that the game for Android and iOS was released in 2011 further down under «Remakes» it is 2013. Plus there is the question if it was removed from the Apple-Store because they don't longer support 32-bit applications or if it had other reasons. I have no answers to these questions. Sorry. I'll take a look at this, though do note it'll probably take just a short while since I plan on reviewing CaptainSparklez first. I should get that one and this one done shortly, however. NegativeMP1 20:05, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

No rush. :) IceWelder [] 20:48, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

General criteria

All cases that could warrant a quickfail at WP:GAFAIL are not present in this article. There are no signs of copyright violations, edit warring, or cleanup banners and tags. Moving on to the review.

Review

Lead

  • No issues here.

Gameplay

  • "Using the hidden "owner menu", the owner can set up certain minigames to play practical jokes on a sucker" - For consistency with the rest of the article, change "on a sucker" to "on the sucker".
  • In the Desert Bus section, there should probably be a bit more elaboration or explanation on the rest stops. Using the GameSetWatch source as a basis, maybe add a sentence after "one ride takes eight hours in real-time." that is something on the lines of "The player will occasionally reach bus stops on their trip, but no other passengers will get on."
  • Consider adding alt text to the Desert Bus screenshot.

Development

  • Same as lead, no issues here.

Reception

  • Again, no issues here.

Legacy

  • The Remakes section should probably be renamed to "Remakes of Desert Bus"
  • It is fairly obvious, but it should probably be clarified that the Atari and Intellivision versions were homebrew as well.

Final comments

Overall this article is pretty solid, no major issues but there are a few small things that could be tweaked. Putting this on hold, also sorry for the six day wait, I was working on other articles and some irl stuff. NegativeMP1 22:29, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Nevermind the GA review tool broke so I can't put it on hold. Hopefully you see this in your watchlist lol. NegativeMP1 22:31, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the review, @NegativeMP1! I made some teeny-tiny alterations that should address your concerns. Regards, IceWelder [] 10:11, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

  • ... that Desert Bus requires eight hours of continuous play to gain one point? Source: "You got 1 point for an eight hour shift, and then a guy came in and said, 'Do you want to pull a double shift, Mac?' And then you could drive back to Tucson for another eight hours for another point." (Penn Jillette Discusses Unreleased Sega CD Game; ref #7)
    • ALT1: ... that Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors, canceled in 1995, was preserved through a review copy? Source: "Last September Frank Cifaldi, the founder of Lost Levels, posted a review of magic/comedy duo Penn and Teller's never-released SegaCD game, Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors. Now Waxy is hosting a torrent of the game" (Penn & Teller SegaCD game unearthed; ref #26) + "last September, Frank Cifaldi (founder of Lost Levels) received a backup CD-ROM made by a fellow videogame writer of a review copy he’d received a decade earlier. He posted extensive screenshots and a review to the Something Awful Forums. He eventually added a torrent, but it’s long since dead. So here’s an active torrent" (Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors from Waxy; ref #25)
