Personalized search refers to search experiences that are tailored specifically to an individual's interests by incorporating information about the individual beyond specific query provided.

conflict of interest, power through media and content controls

Just wanted to point out that in the earlier days of the Internet, data hadn't amassed yet due to constraints from price cost in the physical storage market. The idea people were being surveyed and profiles was thought to be immoral and against people's rights. Social norms are not laws. Standards are not rules. They're merely guidelines that aid in keeping society in bounds. Fairness and justice were guiding principles of democracy. It was unconciousable to think an American company, that came from the Land of the Free, to find a way to make money from words and speech. Libraries existed for this. To go against the core collective of trades and thoughts of the people, would've lead to a weakened adoption .

And so we were given what we wanted. And Google got what they wanted.

It's a misconception. That people believe Google has the best services when in fact they've followed Microsoft's lead initially. Stearing out of every legal battle possible while Microsoft carved a path and hit every ugly branch falling down the tree. This was how Google became the power it is. By others doing something first, and Google saw value in bettering their own services, and thus Microsoft was offered up as sacrificial lamb. Whatever the courts decided in that monopoly case brought against MS, illuminated the only course which Google could take.

Google makes their money by creating products from their customers who dislike them most. It's served them well in some instances while not so much in others. Vocal and public outspoken voices opposed to these things were eventually targeted, questioned and asked "what they didn't like about the services, how can it be improved? " And they listened. They've always listened but it's been hidden from people by magic and ideals... Own self interests people don't realize they're apart of.. because the sense of _self_ identity. People thought they could say and do whatever they wanted on the Internet. And initially that was true. But things have evolved. Control cost money now. You can pay to play or subscribe to be in it but no effin way is it free. That's why speech is being attacked because look where it got us thus far?
