Gawker controversy
editI added a bit about Hyman's attempt to virally market himself through blogs like Gawker by posing as a female sending 'tips' online (and the fact that he got caught doing it)
Here's the text I added:
- Gawker Controversy
- On 5/18/07, media blog Gawker.com posted an entry in which they allege that Hyman was sending Gawker 'tips' to the site posing as a female named 'Margo Leitner.' Hyman (as Leitner) would suggest that Gawker link to articles he had written for various publications as a form of 'viral marketing.'
- New York Sun writer David Blum described the incident thusly:
- "Gawker unmasked Mr. Hyman by printing a series of suspiciously promotional emails about his work over a period of months — all from the same address. It was silly, of course, for Mr. Hyman to have hidden behind a phony female persona, and in the end Gawker's gotcha moment seemed fair punishment. But can Mr. Hyman be blamed for his attempt at a viral marketing campaign for himself? Thirteen million blogs now fight for attention every day on the Internet, and it has never been more commonplace than this moment in history for a writer's words to disappear without notice."
I think this is a relevant piece of info for this guy's wiki page. The New York Sun and Gawker.com ran stories about this guy's attempt to promote himself through deception. It also signals a sea change in the writing world, where 'real' freelance journalists have to compete with the online self-publishers who are supplanting them, and the lengths the old guard will go to in order to get their work seen.

The Other Peter Hyman
editAnother Peter Hyman, who you need an article on, is an important confidant of and advisor to Tony Blair. He used to be a speechwriter but left to become a teacher, and still has the ear of the prime minister. See for example http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2168930_3,00.html
