The statement "The book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance uses the name Phaedrus as a pseudonym for both an unnamed philosopher and the author himself. The original man is also briefly mentioned by way of explanation." is a misunderstanding. Pirsig makes it clear that he is referring to Phaedrus (Plato). --Dan 15:14, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

The former article was originally taken directly from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, since when scholarship has moved decisively beyond the received opinions of more than a century ago. It was a scandal that Wikipedia ever allowed the reproduction of such outdated and opinionated material, given its ambition to be an encyclopedia for the 21st century, and lazy dependence upon that unsatisfactory original is what has hamstrung later editing.
