editThe former article was originally taken directly from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, since when scholarship has moved decisively beyond the received opinions of more than a century ago. It was a scandal that Wikipedia ever allowed the reproduction of such outdated and opinionated material, given its ambition to be an encyclopedia for the 21st century, and lazy dependence upon that unsatisfactory original is what has hamstrung later editing.
