Additions to Physocephala tibialis

edit

I am editing this page as part of a class project to improve/add Wikipedia articles on Diptera, using the guidelines put forth by the Diptera Wiki project. I added sections about distribution, habitat, description, life stages, food resources, parental care and the parasitic behaviors of the fly. I cited and referenced 11 different scientific articles about P. tibialis and hope to update this page even more in the future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christina.lindberg (talkcontribs) 05:27, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Behavior Ecology Peer Edit

I have been assigned to edit this page as a part of a class project improving/adding Wikipedia articles on flies. I went through and refined the language in the article, mostly removing comma splices and consolidating information. I also reorganized the introduction to prioritize the right pieces of information, making sure the fly's parasitism was highlighted and the information on its distribution didn't dangle at the end of the section. — RachelXinruHua (talkcontribs) 03:05, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Good job compiling this article using the limited literature on the fly! You captured the most interesting aspects of the fly in the lead paragraph, and the article as a whole is well-written. Why is "induced grave digging in host" bolded in the contents box? Was this done intentionally? The life cycle and food resources sections could be improved by including subsections for the adult stage of the fly. Thank you for your contribution to Wikipedia! This article was well written and in both the style of appropriate language as well as the depth in information provided! I have additionally added a section of research regarding the hosts defense mechanisms in response to the parasite infection, along with an additional source.Rchiou (talk) 04:21, 18 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Overall, Christy’s article on the Physocephala tibialis is well written and contains a lot of pertinent information that helps readers get a great picture on the fly. In order to improve the article, I would start off by suggesting a reworking of the background section. When initially reading over it, I felt that the information included in the section, although very interesting and fun to read, was too focused on the parasitism aspect of the fly. Instead, moving all of this information into a separate subsection in the “Life Cycle” section and then rewriting the background section to touch on key aspects of the fly would help the article flow much better. Another aspect of the article that I would consider reworking is the section on “Food Resources”. Right now, there is only information on the dietary preferences of the fly in the larval stage; however, digging deeper and finding more information on the food resources the fly has in other stages of its life cycle would be interesting and just as pertinent. I also understand that a lot of the information included/not included in the article is very much a function of the available research that exists for this fly so maybe there isn’t a lot information on it yet! I also added a picture of a bumblebee near the parasitism section for better visualization. Finally, a section dedicated to the mating behaviors of this fly would be a nice addition as well. It might be good to still have a taxobox for the page with general information about the species and a picture. For the geographic distribution, I think it would be good to specify where the fly actually occurs, on top of the range of its distribution, which is also very helpful background information. Additionally, I wonder if you can expand on the habitat section, what kind of species of plants and host species that you mentioned in the paragraph. Also, I am curious what their hosts are, as you mentioned in the food resources section. It is also a bit weird to have just one subheading within a single-standing section. Possible Additions

edit

Adult Section for "Food Resources"

edit

Article currently only has a "Food Resources" subsection for larvae, so a section for adults would be a useful addition.

A section for adults under life history would also be a useful addition. Joshkim_wustl (talk) 04:29, 3 December 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.11.150.142 (talk) Reply

Male/Female Anatomy

edit

Contrast could be made between male and female adults in the "Physical Description" section.

Mating

edit

Article could use a section on the mating behavior of the fly. "Parental care" is currently the only section on behavior besides descriptions of parasitism.
