Ambiguous sentence

"It is used to produce a fragrant cologne called Bay rum, which is, besides its fruit, toxic."

This sentence seems to be saying that the cologne called Bay Rum has fruit, and that bay rum cologne is toxic, apart from its fruit.

I presume the sense should be that the plant is toxic apart from its fruit, not that the cologne is toxic?

If this is the same plant as "bois d'Inde", used in Creole cooking, it cannot be toxic.

I have just returned from 2 weeks sailing in the Grenadines, and leaves of "bois d'inde" were a key ingredient of the fish dishes cooked by my skipper ... and they weren't the least toxic ... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.23.142.193 (talk) 20:22, 8 April 2012 (UTC) I would be surprised if it was toxic as I put it into my fish tanks.
