Use of the word "erroneously" when discussing 'ping' and 'pong' naming scheme.

edit

'These two messages are also sometimes erroneously called "ping" and "pong".'

Where is the citation for this being erroneous? I can't find a reputable source that explicitly disallows this naming scheme, and there are multiple locations in which this is used as common parlance for this networking behavior. Milomedic (talk) 20:18, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'd add to that that I'm fairly sure it's historic usage, as there were old terminal systems I recall using that replied to a ping request with the text "PONG!". I looked for sourcing briefly, but wasn't able to find a smoking gun; that said, since the current "erroneous" bit is also unsourced, I'm going to go ahead and change it and point back here.
