Talk:Pittsburgh Botanic Garden

The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden was founded in 1988 as the Horticultural Society of Western Pennsylvania to promote and encourage horticulture and botany, the conservation of natural resources and the establishment of a botanical garden in western Pennsylvania. The organization became a 501(c)(3)non-profit corporation in 1991 and adopted its current name, as the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, in 2010.

History

Begun as the Horticultural Society of Western Pennsylvania (HSWP), the first few years of this organization focused on hosting speakers, holding plant sales, and disseminating horticultural information. It quickly became evident that something more was needed – a place where people could go to experience plants by utilizing all of their senses. What was envisioned was a public garden that in scale and scope would be far beyond anything else in our region. It was agreed that the best way to achieve this was to plan and build the region’s first comprehensive outdoor botanic garden focusing on hardy plants adaptable to our soils and climate. As plans to build the outdoor botanic garden materialized, in 2004, post Hurricane Ivan flooding revealed extensive acid mine drainage (AMD) throughout the site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.219.189.20 (talk) 20:57, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
