Critique

This article spends a lot of time pointing out how great the symphony is, and in particular how the various conductors led it on an continuous path of greatness. I love the PSO, and happen to think they are one of our great symphonies, but the article comes off as biased, and there's no need to harp on the point like it does. One example of more objective info that could be added is a mention of the circumstances of Janson's departure. I'm not a PSO expert, but his 6-year tenure was on the short side, and I believe I remember reading in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that one reason for his departure was that he wasn't crazy about Pittsburgh audiences (although I may be confusing that with something resident conductor Ed Cumming once said). I have done some rewriting to try to clean up the excesses of the prior version. I have left out discussions of the conservatism of the community and specifically the Symphony Board, since I think that could get too POV for some, but the fact is that music directors for decades have fought repertory battles with the board. According to the article Jansons served for 7 (or 8? merely naming beginning and ending years does not discern the number of years actually worked). Seven or eight years is not usually "short" as Symphony Directors go (e.g., Victor Herbert served the PSO for 6 (or 7?) years). The point in the article that the orchestra was disbanded for 16 (or 17?) years in 1910 - 1926 due to lack of money was new to me (born in Pittsburgh in 1953), and very interesting and important in my opinion. Daniel Meyer

Your internal link to Daniel Meyer needs correction if you plan to maintain him on your page. The name links to another person with the same name. Mr Meyer was just nominated as the new conductor for the Erie Philharmonic last night, so I'll be adding him there as Daniel Meyer (conductor).
