Age record
editBenedict had the longest lifespan among popes in nearly 800 years. This needs to be mentioned. --95.24.68.78 (talk) 21:48, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- That's assuming we're including time as a former pope. GoodDay (talk) 22:17, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
Missing alternate perspectives including controversies which can be found with most public figures. Interesting that was left out.
editNamely the critiques in how sexual abuse cases were handled, acknowledged by him or even the alleged accusations. This article is biased. 71.17.81.187 (talk) 14:27, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Pope Benedict XVI "Papa Benedetto XVI" was a conservative by the standards of the Catholic Church, and in the realm of European, or even American, politics a neoconservative or proto-conservative;John Paul II and Francis would be considered more moderate conservatives; if they held elected office, that is. The The Pope is appointed not elected of course. The Pope has power insofar that people accept the power structure of the Catholic Church. If a large number of Catholics decided they would leave the church unless reforms are instituted, that would be one way to send a message to the Pope that there are limits to his power. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:6000:C305:78DF:A0F6:4572:A9D0:1CE6 (talk) 09:25, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Ratzinger's middle name
editThis is given in the article as "Aloisius", but the German article gives it as "Alois", with no mention of the variant "Aloisius". I am inclined to think that the German article is likely to have it right. After all, Joseph Ratzinger was German. Furthermore, the pronunciation given for the middle name in the English article ("[æl.əʊˈɪs.ɪəs]") is thoroughly bogus. To begin with, German doesn't have the vowel "[æ]", and nor is a U ever pronounced "[ə]" or an O ever pronounced "[əʊ]". There is something very wrong here. The German name "Alois" is pronounced "[ˈaː.lɔɪ̯s]".
So what exactly is going on? What was Joseph Ratzinger's middle name? Kelisi (talk) 18:07, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
(Later) I have done a little digging and have found that most sources that mention Ratzinger's middle name give it as "Alois"; I only found one or two that give it as "Aloysius" (English-language sources — and it is the English form of the name), and NONE AT ALL that said "Aloisius". So I shall change what the article says. Ratzinger's middle name was clearly "Alois"; all German-language sources that mention a middle name say that.
Years ago now, our article gave "Alois" as his middle name, but this was "corrected" by a now long-inactive Wikipedian named User:Zeppelin26 on 18 November 2010. His authority for doing so was apparently an online book cover at this page – which is now gone – so nobody can confirm it. Anyway, it would be needless to try, as almost all sources say "Alois"; so I will correct what I see as thirteen-and-a-half-year-old nonsense, and also insert the right pronunciation.
