Tom Swift Terminal

This was the Sol computer designed by Lee Felsenstein and Bob Marsh. It appeared in the July 1976 issue of Popular Electronics.

I did write an article about Radio-Electronics. After the Ziff-Davis version (1954-1985) of Popular Electronics ended, the Radio-Electronics publisher (Gernsback) picked up the name. In the end Popular Electronics and Radio-Electronics were merged into Poptronics. So it would be easy to get confused about the magazines.

The 1980s saw the electronics hobbyist market change from building projects from transistors and integrated circuits into one of plugging in computer boards. In November 1982 the magazine became Computers and Electronics and that title stopped publication in April 1985.

That is not quite true, the magazine mistakenly thought that's what the hobbiest market had become and changed itself. As a result, they drove away most of their readers and were forced to stop publication. The market itself did not change to "plugging in computer boards", hence the sucess when Gernsback relaunched the title.

Why was this removed it is true. Here is my experience.

I was an electronics hobbyists and subscribed to popular electronics since the 60’ s when it changed to computers and electronics. What really happened is that the new owner did not like schematics Quote “They were ugly”. He had one electronics project and that was it. Because of that he lost 90% of the subscriptions in one year including me! That is what killed Popular electronics, Most of us went to Radio Electronics. You just had to read the letters in Radio Electronics to see what happened to Popular electronics. Rewrite

I have started a total rewrite. I still have more to go on the Gernsback Era (1988 to 2003). I will add magazine covers of each era.

I anyone wants to improve my grammer please do so. I have more details on almost any phase the the magazines history if you have any questions.
