Independent hamlet
editThe article claims that Port Gaverne is technically an independent hamlet, without defining exactly what an independent hamlet is. This isn't a term normally used to describe UK settlements or local government constructs, although there is always the (unlikely IMHO) possibility that Port Gaverne has some form of sui generis status similar to that of the Isles of Scilly.
Assuming we are not talking sui generis, then the key factor for small rural settlements is usually whether they constitute a civil parish, or are part of a bigger civil parish. If Port Gaverne is indeed a civil parish, then it does have an element of independence, but that would be better described by saying that Port Gaverne is a hamlet and civil parish. If Port Gaverne is not a civil parish, then we need to say what exactly it is technically independent from.
To resolve this, we need cites. So I've added the fact tag. -- Starbois (talk) 14:05, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
