Many local slaves were freed
editThat's unlikely (as written), because Maryland was under Union control throughout the war, the the proclamation applied only to areas not under Union control. TEDickey (talk) 20:53, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I caught the Emancipation Proclamation problem but since I'm not a Maryland expert, I didn't confirm til yesterday the date and process by which Maryland's slaves were freed. That said, I don't have much time to research this area, and I read somewhere a year ago that Port Tobacco was the largest slavetrading port at the time the overseas trade was abolished (1808). Perhaps someone can extend this section concerning that trade. I've only visited the Port Tobacco site once, and after the museum had closed for the afternoon, so I don't know if its exhibits cover this period. I didn't notice any sign of a slave jail, as was common at least in Virginia during the within-US slave trade era. The outdoor signage basically covers the colonial era and the John Wilkes Booth escape, so I added a mention and links for that in this article, as well as dividers.Jweaver28 (talk) 12:46, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- The parent article does agree with my comment (see Maryland#Civil_War), though it doesn't go into any detail about what did happen to slaves during the Civil War. The second sentence of the section is (no surprise) an unsourced opinion TEDickey (talk) 19:06, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
