I don't think this article is close to passing. There is much useful information here, but it is too disorganized, the writing is too sloppy in places, and there are insufficient citations. I'll try later to provide some useful advice for improvements, but I don't anticipate passing this article in the near term. Have begun to find citations for every possible fact in article. It would be useful if Crystal or anyone else could let us know which sentences need citations more than others so priorities can be set instead of just finding citations for things that might not be all that urgent at this point. Albany Basin

I added a link to Albany Basin, but it redirects back to this article. Nowhere does this article explain what the Albany Basin is. Camelbinky, could you add this info, either in this article or in a separate article? Crystal whacker (talk) 18:18, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Missing references

I won't retract the "sloppy" writing statement I made above, but I fixed all instances of it that I could find. If you're not done with your general education, see misplaced modifier or dangling modifier (I forget which) for one of the types of errors I found in your writing. It's always important to make clear what you are saying: the Erie Canal does not go to Montreal; rather the Erie Canal goes to Lake Erie, and another separate canal goes to Montreal.

I noticed several sentences that had missing references. It may be that the fact was stated in a reference cited elsewhere; if so, use <ref name="whatever" /> to use the same reference for two separate statements. If this confuses you, I can help you with the technical aspects of implementation. Find the statements needing sources by searching for "citation needed", like this. This is a "deal breaker" for Good Article status: if you can't find references, or explain why references are not needed, I will not pass the article.

The references that do exist are apparently from reliable sources. Where possible you should add the author, date of publication, and any other available information in case someone wants to look up the source. Crystal whacker (talk) 23:08, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Camelbinky made substantial improvements to the article and asked me to review it again. I checked the difference between what I reviewed and the current version, and I am satisfied that he has answered all my concerns, especially by citing the previously unattributed statements. Reference checking

I am converting references to Google Books to "cite book" format. It is an inconsequential change, but it allows me to add ISBN and other relevant information as I would for a printed book used as a source. Crystal whacker (talk) 01:00, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

On reference number 5, you state "John Rives" as the author. I can't find his name in the link. Are you sure that he is the author? Is it stated somewhere in the source that I just didn't see?

I added Jeffrey S. Levinton as the author of reference number 9 regarding the Hudson River estuary. The course homepage, of which the linked page is a subpage, lists as the contact info of the professor an email address which checks out with Dr. Levinton's email address at SUNY Stony Brook. It appears that Dr. Levinton is a professor at Stony Brook and gave a visiting lecture or course at SUNY Albany; therefore I list the publisher as SUNY Stony Brook. (Full disclosure: I am a student at SUNY Stony Brook, and Camelbinky studied at SUNY Albany, so there may be a little "turf war" happening here.) Crystal whacker (talk) 01:12, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

"Claims settled in deadly Stellamare capsizing" is a dead link. I was not able to find a replacement link. Again, please try to find the author and date if a replacement link is unavailable. Okay, I'm getting tired of this, and it's not essential to cross all the I's and dot all the T's, much as I want to do it. I've spent about an hour on this, or at least a half hour, and that will be enough. If I can manage to finish fixing up the references, that would be nice, but I won't make it a high priority.
