I and many portuguese people belive it's a matter of time till "praxe" reach the same level as hazing in other countries. the fact is that, in Portugal, one person already died because of that and there is a considerable amount of pictures of undeniable abuse inside and out of the internet. Wanting to make someone suffer is natural, what aint natural is the power the individual have, nowdays, to please his desires, I gess.
- Wanting to make someone suffer is not "natural"! In the case of the Portuguese praxe it is just plainly simply so that many Portuguese sophomores give themselves much power over the freshmen and overly abuse that power. What might surprise even more is that the vice-principals of the universities think that is OK to bully the freshmen. At least I have not seen any statements from any Portuguese vice-principal saying that the praxe must be a warm welcome rather than day to day harassments (on any level) over several months (sic!). I'm a journalist in the portuguese public radio and tv (rdp/rtp), and I must say I'm quiet surprised with the statement that someone died because of "praxe" practises.-It's simply not true! for a question of credibility the author of such information sould have the moral obligation of refering when did it hapened, who died, where did it hapen, who was arrested and condemned.-The problem, I do believe, is that the author of that "information" can't give us this facts, simply because nothing hapened, except author's innuendo and lack of honnesty.----Joaquim Reis
I have two things to say to user Benkeboy:
1 - Words such as aint, nowdays and gess do not exist in English.
2 - You shouldn't generalize. And specially not with claims that you cannot confirm (like mr. Joaquim Reis has stated).--Botashake (talk) 22:46, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Lack of referencing
editThere isn't proper sourcing in the article, particularly the criticism section, seeing as it makes several claims of events which we can't be sure happened or not - and if they did not, it's an extremely serious bias - especially for a subject this controversial. Seeing as we can't allow this content here, I removed the unsourced content (and some POV statements) untill proper sources can be found. Cheers. --Mad Tinman T C 00:08, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- I've gone ahead and added some sources to praxe related incidents as what was left after I removed the unsourcing seemed even worse a bias, only this time pro praxe. If someone could find sources for the more serious incidents (the rapes, ignoring of the incidents by law enforcement) it'd be great. Cheers. --Mad Tinman T C 00:40, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Seeing as how the article has now a bunch of references, I thought I'd update the WP:PT assessment to B, but a closer look reveals that 80% of them are in Portuguese. While I do support the Portuguese language, this is the English Wikipedia and we have to accept its audience will rarely be able to read Portuguese. References in articles are not there only to make an article "valid", so to say. References also exist to help people find more about a given topic. Otherwise, good job so far, Mad Tinman.--Ivo Emanuel Gonçalves talk / contribs (join WP:PT) 18:26, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
The following text was removed because of lack of referencing regarding the relation between deposition and "praxe" :
"The Praxe is a continuation of medieval practices once common in universities throughout Europe, a ritual known as deposition..."
Only 6/11 references are working--Botashake (talk) 22:49, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Academic Outfit
editI've removed the part that says you can't wear the academic outfit.. It's an academic outfit, you can wear anytime you want, you just can't participate in praxe-related stuff if you didn't participate in it... But the outfit has nothing to do with the praxe, except that you can only praxe someone if you're wearing it Lumi-chan (talk) 00:33, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Outfit
editI've removed the portion of text that said that you had to join the Praxe in order to wear the outfit.
The reference that existed was to the code of praxe that belongs to the Minho University. This code says that the outfit represents the University and that all students can wear it when ever they like (Chapter V, first part). There is no prohibition for those that don't join the Praxe.
There is also the Decree 10:290, signed by the Portuguese President Manuel Teixeira Gomes in 12 of November 1924 clearly states that all students can wear such outfit.
Lack of referencing / incorrect referencing / Not neutral
editThis article completely lacks referencing, and most references are broken link. The posted events are generalizing bad situations that do happen, but are not the all (far from that).
The sentence "number of institutions organize alternative initiation events" and the reference do not make sense, since some of the events ARE organized by the praxe students. So it is not an alternative, it is part of the all thing.
I strongly believe this article should be completely reviewed as it is not unpartial at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.240.236.188 (talk) 01:38, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
