Fair use images

edit

Fair use is only applicable for a limited number of images per article. Two or three is the normal guideline. This article exceeds that. The JPS 14:53, 12 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've since had an independent review of these images. In their current state they are not fair use. There needs to be more said about the characters than this to justify fair use. Also, I think too many images might make the page look amateurish. The JPS 13:42, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good Article status

edit

I have reviewed this article and believe it to be very well put together; compelling prose, facts correctly referenced and a good use of images. Well done to all those who have contributed to the article! Wikiwoohoo 18:26, 19 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sheringham

edit

I've removed the reference to Sheringham because the fictional neighbouring town in Press Gang is, in fact, Sherrington. Speednik 21:23, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I wonder, though, given the similarity, if it's worth a mention? The JPStalk to me 00:41, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Repent in hell"?

edit

What does this sentence mean? Is there some dream sequence where Lynda is in hell? What's she repenting? Was she in some dangerous situation and does she die, ambiguously? At first, I thought this line was vandalism, but it's been there for quite a few edits.--ML5 (talk) 12:44, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

(SPOILER ALERT) Yes, she is in a dangerous situation. The series ends as the newsroom burns around her, as she reflects on how she has treat people. It is ambiguous whether or not she dies. The JPStalk to me 21:53, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that; it now makes sense. However, spoiler or not, your explanation should be added to the article, otherwise it does not make sense. Alternatively, just delete that paragraph from the article. As the paragraph isn't necessary to explain Lynda's character, the spoiler guideline advises to remove the information from the article.--ML5 (talk) 08:48, 17 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've just deleted it, it wasn't necessary.--ML5 (talk) 12:52, 25 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Press Gang vs. Degrassi

edit

Last time I was over on the right side of the pond I was flipping channels when I paused on some sort of vapid 80's flashback show. What caught my attention was a very short segment on a show for teens, which appeared to be remake of Degrassi Junior High. This stopped me, because many members of my immediate family were involved in its taping, and I was more than a little curious to see it several time zones away.

Now of course it wasn't Degrassi, and it is only now when I landed on this page in some circuitous route that I realize it was clearly Press Gang they were talking about. Now it's true that any 80's show for teens is likely to have some similarities, but in this case they seem too obvious - there seem to be clear parallels between many of the characters and the story arcs appear similar in all but the names of the protagonists.

Does anyone know if there was any CBC/BBC cross-fertilization in this case?

Maury Markowitz (talk) 20:02, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not that I'm aware. The similarities are mainly due to the subject matter. Degrassi was somewhat darker in tone, and dealt with serious issues in a more overtly educational way. One thing I just discovered is that only nine episodes of Degrassi were screened in the UK - all from the first series - because it was deemed inappropriate for younger viewers. Press Gang was generally lighter, despite tackling serious stuff in some episodes. It would be interesting to do a comparison, though! Edit: Could you be thinking of Grange Hill? I remember that as more similar to Degrassi. Sadiemonster (talk) 17:09, 8 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

is there any other meaning to "press gang" than the one being discussed here?

Butter him up?

edit

The Storyline section says the writers got away with a lot of innuendo, stating 'In one episode Lynda says she's going to "butter him up", and, when asked while on a date in a restaurant if he was staying at the hotel, Colin replies "I shouldn't think so: it's only the first date."' There's a couple of problems here: firstly, the phrase "to butter someone up" simply means to manipulate them with flattery, so I'm not sure how this qualifies as innuendo, unless someone can expand on the context. Secondly, it's not clear to whom the pronouns refer. Lynda says she's going butter whom up? It can't be Colin, but he's the only "he" in this sentence. Can someone clear this up?
