X windows

X Windows wasn't developed out of Project Athena but was a separate project under LCS. I think that there was quite a bit of cooperation between the two. Roadrunner 23:14, 9 Apr 2004 (UTC)

No phase out

Athena isn't scheduled to be phased out unless User:24.128.48.91 has some real inside information.

Some discussion about the OSF's role in Project Athena and how their Motif Window Manger and DFS projects were related to their involvement with Athena developement as well as their association with DFS/AFS/ Andrew CMU...

Memorys hazy but the user experience I remember was the whole login, get the users account and copy it local, and the DASH toolbar.... and how basically you had a time-bomb for connecting to remote resources over the network in the form of the Kerberos authentication ticket that you got when you logged in...

It practically looked the same from a Decstation 5000 to a Sun Sparc... Only slightly unusual machine over Athena was the SGI boxes... they looked similar but due to IRIX, things were treated a bit differently..

If anyone would elaborate.. There was a woman named Jackie Stewart (I may be wrong on the last name) that used to be over at OSF that was involved with some of the initial Project Athena environment software and things such as Zephyr and Hesoid (The user/filesystem database)

At one point, DEC was selling a software package consisting of most of the Athena base modules under the "DEC Polycenter" moniker - I also recall Intel hving a hand with Dec and Project Athena in relation to the physical link layer ... required FORTRAN? not.

The article currently claims (and the citation supports the idea) that MIT students were required by Athena to learn FORTRAN? It's simply not true that the Course 6 EECS faculty would have agreed to teach FORTRAN in the 1980s, they were already not teaching it in the 1970s. It's simply not true. FORTRAN would have had use in Courses 1, 2, 8, 10, probably 13 and 16... so perhaps it was "FORTRAN or LISP" in terms of courses taught. But no way CS students learned FORTRAN at MIT in the 80's. (also, Athena was based on unix which was based on C, FORTRAN would simply be useless) 68.175.11.48 (talk) 21:37, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
