I took the liberty of re-writing the biography based on Propertius' own elegies and the consensus opinion. Also, the original summary of his poetry was mainly the promotion of the theory that he is a subversive poet, a point that is still under debate. I've retained the main points of the theory along with at least one citation to back it up. I've also amplified details about his relationship with Cynthia, which dominates most of the first three books.Chjones 60656 20:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

much as i hate to, i really have to object to this. current critical opinion generally is very much against a biographical reading of the relationship with cynthia. making biographical comments about the real propertius's love life based on the poems is really just not on. will edit this at a later date. 129.67.38.48 (talk) 15:27, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

A quick follow-up adds specific notes on the textual problems, as these questions seem to be foremost in all scholarly discussions of thpoet. I've also added few notes on influences and included a "modern assessment", since Propertius is far more popular with 20th century readers than he was with Neo-classical ones.Chjones 60656 19:49, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I cant see that Aristotle has any relevance, either for his extended treatment of tragedy, his briefer remarks about epic, or his passing mentions of comedy. They just do not apply to elegists. 86.169.44.70 (talk) 13:37, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Love assizes?

edit

What were these medieval love assizes he and Cynthia were summoned to? ISTR, vaguely, that there was a medieval literary survey of love poets and lovers where they were discussed in this manner, but as the internal link was simply to the legal proceeding, it's not very useful here. Someone who's an expert on medieval love poetry should probably create an article for this. Snowgrouse (talk) 08:14, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
