Columbus Day?
editIn Spain, 12th october isn't Columbus Day, the day is called "Día de la Hispanidad" with the celebrate of Our Lady Virgin Of Pilar --85.152.177.73 14:52, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- From www.spainexpat.com/spain/information/holidays_in_spain/, one of the sources mentioned at the end of this Wikipedia article:
“ | October 12-Spain’s National Day (Día de la Hispanidad-National Holiday)
Spain’s National Holiday, otherwise known as Hispanic Day or Fiesta Nacional de España or Día de la Hispanidad (in Spanish) is Spain’s national day held annually on October 12th. This national holiday commemorates the exact date when Christopher Columbus first set a foot in the Americas and there is usually a huge parade in the capital city and plenty of celebrations that take place throughout the rest of the country. |
” |
("Columbus Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries of America, commemorating the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the New World on October 12, 1492. It's the name given in the United States to Spain's 'Dia de la Hispanidad'.")
("National Holiday of Spain, or Day of the Spanish, commemorates the historic event of the Discovery of America by Spain. The celebration takes place every October 12, with a parade in Columbus Square [Plaza de Colón] in Madrid, attended by His Majesty the King and the Royal Family and representatives of all the powers of the state, as well as many of the presidents of the autonomous [communities]")
- I don't have a more authoritative Web site in hand, but all of this seems plausible to me. Both holidays -- the U.S. version and the Spanish version -- are marking the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Obviously they celebrate it for different reasons and in different ways, but nonetheless, Dia de la Hispanidad in Spain is related to the English-speaking world's Columbus Day. ``` W i k i W i s t a h ``` 04:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Madrid - Virgin of Almudena
editOn the Virgin's page - "her feast day, 9 November, is a major holiday in Madrid." Today is a public holiday in Madrid (moved from Sunday). So should this be included ? -- Beardo (talk) 12:17, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
