Did Nell Gwynne really live in a church
editThe article says:
- Purley's saxon church was demolished in the time of Stephen and Matilda, to be replaced by the current Norman church, St Mary the Virgin. It was once home to Nell Gwynne.
Seems a bit unlikely. I will request a source. -- Chris j wood (talk) 15:33, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- I suspect she lived in the village, rather than the church, and this is just sloppy wording. However, it has now been removed. Biscuittin (talk) 11:46, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Evidence for the Removal of Hyphens in the Village Name
editCan the hyphens be removed from the name of the village in this article, please?
If one goes to the Royal Mail website, http://postcode.royalmail.com, and looks for the address of the parish office then one receives the following:
Purley On Thames Parish Council Goosecroft Lane Beech Road Purley On Thames READING RG8 8DR
By way of contrast if one uses the same site to seek the address of the Town Hall in Henley then this results in:
Town Hall Market Place HENLEY-ON-THAMES RG9 2AQ
Note the hyphens in the latter and not the former.
Further, using Google's Street View one can see the sign for the village when it is approached from the East. Use the following horrendous URL to view it: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Purley+On+Thames,+Reading&sll=51.537555,-0.904634&sspn=0.001021,0.002057&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Purley+On+Thames,+Reading,+Berkshire,+United+Kingdom&t=h&layer=c&cbll=51.481483,-1.059603&panoid=GGO1zdkBxIzQUJd1lOfJ_w&cbp=12,49.08,,2,9.76&ll=51.489667,-1.059408&spn=0,0.032916&z=15
If anyone can provide evidence for the village name being spelled with hyphens I will back down.
Social and Council Housing
editMy addition to the page, where I tried to justify the statement that Purley contains affordable housing with reference to the social and council estate in Purley, was removed, supposedly for 'POV' contributions. How is this so? This is a fact, not an opinion, and it is evidence of the sentence which preceded it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ScienceLion (talk • contribs) 20:25, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Population of Purley on Thames
editShouldn't the population count be updated to 4,394 since the new, 2011, census data is now available?
