Is it appropriate to call this an "is" rather than a "was?"

If it continues to exist at all, this object's distance away from us is much greater now. Difficult to settle on a tense to use. Is there one which combines "as currently observed" with "historic relic." If you could view a Civil War battle unfold in the manner of a presently occurring event, how would you refer to it?
