editIt's actually in 2007 that a group of surfers made it the first time (a French and a Brazilian) breaking the record of the longest wave: 17km during 1 hour and 10 minutes. They also broke the law since it was forbidden until then to get close to the water because of the high number of casualties in the past. A quick Google search will bring up article of the event and scans of Chinese newspaper.
