Quebec Gazette Issue Dates Printers: Wm & G. Brown
editAs regards the posted dates for the beginning and end of the life of the Quebec Gazette 1760-1769, there appears to be some discrepancy. I have in my possession a copy dated April 19,1787; Issue #1131 as printed by Wiiliam and G. Brown in the district of Quebec, namely: Mountain Street and the milieu de la Grande Cote respectively. This particular issue I might question the validity of were it not for the fact that it is printed on antique rag-type laid paper as is the wrapper addressed to a man whose name the paper bears on the back page. As authenticity is not an issue, the dates listed on this page would seem the more credible as indicated by my own copy. I also find it curious that not only is the newspaper is credited on one page as being from 1760-1769 under the heading of Quebec Gazette, yet on the other claims to've been founded by the same man (Mr. William Brown) on June 21, 1764 until 1873 when (it) "joined the Morning Chronicle to become the Quebec Chronicle and Quebec Gazette." That is a somewhat seemingly ambigous statement, unless we are to infer that it was known as :" The Quebec Gazette/Chronicle," or was perhaps split in name amongst its geographical or political circulation. The originally viewed heading and its indications pertaining to the Quebec Gazette, which herein are questioned are to be found on : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Quebec_historical_newspapers It is indeed a most singularly noteworthy Canadian newspaper being as it was both billingual and the oldest in Canada, if not the whole of North America and worthy of investigation as an historical resource. Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph not published in Quebec or Canada?
editOn April 3, 2009, user:Hotcat removed two categories from this article: "Category:Newspapers published in Quebec", and "Category:Newspapers published in Canada". After a cursory check, I could locate no wp:policy restricting the number of relevant categories that could be applied to an article. Since the categories are useful to the general public by helping them locate the desired subject pages via attributes, there's obvious benefits to the public when such newspapers are categorized by both ~Quebec and ~Canada, in addition to ~Quebec City, which was untouched. As such, I'm reverting the edits which eliminated the two categories. Comments? --HarryZilber (talk) 17:27, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- Usually articles are placed in only one of those categories, there is no need to overcategorize things. The category should be as precise as possible. Since Quebec City is in Quebec, and Quebec is in Canada, it is not necessary to put all three, only the most precise one is needed(Category:Newspapers published in Quebec City). There are pretty much no articles in Category:Newspapers published in Canada, and Category:Newspapers published in Quebec should contain only Quebec-based newspapers not published in Montreal, Quebec City or Sherbrooke.
- Here are some similar examples:
- The Gazette (Montreal) is only in Category:Newspapers published in Montreal. The New York Times is only in Category:Newspapers published in New York City. Take a look at other newspaper articles and they will most often be only categorized by city.
