R-24T Midcourse Guidance?

Nice article but there's a nitpicky puzzle it doesn't answer. The R-24T was basically a "beyond visual range" missile, so it makes it questionable that it got a heat seeker lock before launch from a target so far away. That would imply it was launched in the general direction of the target and performed midcourse guidance using a simple autopilot, only obtaining a heat seeker lock at relatively close range. That would make it a sneaky attacker indeed. However, this is just purely semi-informed speculation that could be dead wrong and it would be nice to get some details.

Some of the sources I've seen state that the range of the 23T is "6.5 km". I assume this is the visibility limit, which suggests it didn't have BVR. That said, there is a very distinct statement about "lock-on after launch" for the -24 version, which does suggest that it could be launched BVR anyway. No info on whether or not it had any sort of "real" midcourse though. Maury 13:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

I read the article and I found some errors in it. The article says that cuban mig-23MFs shotdown two mirages with the R-23. First, the cubans mig-23s in Angola were MLs and BNs only, no a single mig-23MF was used. Second, the planes that were shotdown with R-24s were only two C-130, the mirage was shotdown with a R-60 AA missile.OverG 05:46, 27 June 2007 (UTC)OverG

Soviets Aquire US Missile before it was even built?

Reading this article the section talking about how the Vympel company aquired an AIM-7M Sparrow III Missile in 1968 seems to be wrong. Everything that I have read says that the AIM-7M was initally field to the US in 1982. So shouldn't the line read that the Soviets aquired an AIM-7E Sparrow in 1968 Southernap 06:01, 16 October 2007 (UTC) Southern AP

No, the R-23 its a type of air guided missile of about 25km of range. The R-24 is the upgrade of this missile, adding him 5km more in range and with a better guidance system, they are considered as medium range missiles. I delete the informationa about the R-23s being used to shootdown a Mirage F1. The Mirage, like I said later, was shootdown by a R-60 missile, and the mig-23MF were not present in Angola, only the Mig-23ML was.OverG (talk) 03:24, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
