Plans

edit

This section reads as if we were pre the 2010 change of government, after which the St Athan plans for Cosford came to nothing, but lacks reference to the present Defence Technical Training Change Programme and what is publicly known of its implications for Cosford.Cloptonson (talk) 06:42, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

UPDATE 15 SEPTEMBER 2015 - It was proposed by the Government following date of the above comment to relocate the training functions of Cosford to the site of RAF Lyneham as part of a tri-services Defence College of Technical Training, costed at £121M. However it was announced in Parliament today in written statement by the Defence Secretary that move will not go ahead on the grounds of it being "no longer the best solution". Under the announced changes (described as "U-turn" by local press), the Army would move to the Lyneham site, while Cosford would be given extra work with a fourth school moving from MOD St Athan.
I have incorporated information from the article on RAF Lyneham and a local newspaper report of today's announcement on the page to update the section on "Plans".
Please someone update the narrative to bridge the gap between 2010 and 2012.

Grass Runways

edit

Has anyone been able to verify the existence of the grass runways? During a recent flyover it looked like there were two runways (roughly 01R/35L and 01L/35R) marked off, but I've been unable to find any reference to these strips in any of my usual sources. They all just list the paved runway. (In case you're curious, these sources list all known runways be they paved, grass or water.) If these strips DO exist, then they simply aren't registered with any aviation authority at which point it's debatable whether they should be including in the airport description. I have not edited the page as I do not consider absence of proof to be disproof and welcome any indication that the grass strips are indeed valid.

It looks like it is used for gliding though un-numbered visually, the only ref i could find is this [1] (which is not reliable) also there are two other grass runways which cross the paved runway which are virtually side by side. Gavbadger (talk) 23:10, 26 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
