The station was originally called RTE2, not RTE Two. I even remember the hideous logo it had with the number. RTE confirmed in The Irish Times today that the station will revert to that name again in October. About bloody time. Network 2 was a hideous name. And N2 ridiculous! fadas, no fadas, reversions and aversions, its all very confusing! Djegan 18:38, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Should the yugioh surprise be mentioned?

What was the rationale behind calling it "Network 2" in the first place?

In 1988 RTÉ was facing competition from Commercial Broadcasting hence the revamp of RTE TWO and the change of name to Network 2. I think they wanted Network 2 to seem different to the audience than RTE ONE hence they took the RTE brand away from RTE TWO. The re-brand help the 10 year old station as it was suffering in the ratings against UTV and BBC1NI. RTE TWO and TV3 are now the second most watch channels in Ireland. I liked Network 2 I think it was a bad mistake to re-align it to the RTE Brand. The Idents of the N2 era where the best and most imaginative. I don't know if the Green and Orange in the current look is to suggest that the channel is Irish, I wonder if the Graphic department even thought about that when the choose the colours. Above from IrishTV, thanks.

Misleading lede

The lede misleadingly says that RTE2 "is Ireland's second-oldest television channel". This is not true, since BBC Northern Ireland and UTV were broadcasting before RTE. The lede therefore should say "the Republic of Ireland's second-oldest television channel". I made the edit, but someone reverted. Could we agree to change this so that readers are not misled? Mooretwin (talk) 23:59, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

The link for Ireland brings you to Republic of Ireland. You will not that in the info box that I have placed "Normally tuned to 2 but also: 5 historical openings of NI and IRL channels, or 6 depending on preference". —Preceding unsigned comment added by IrishTV (talkcontribs) 19:43, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
The manual of style for Ireland-related topics states that, where confusion may arise, Republic of Ireland should be used rather than Ireland. Given that the RTE Two is not Ireland's second-oldest TV channel (BBC and UTV pre-date RTE), but is only the second-oldest in the Republic, the intro should therefore use Republic of Ireland, so as to avoid confusion. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, O Fenian is reverting this change. He should restore the reference to Republic of Ireland as per policy. Mooretwin (talk) 11:16, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
I think this can easily be solved by inserting the word "national" making the sentence read "is Ireland's second-oldest national television channel". --HighKing (talk) 17:58, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Or, even better, just refer to "Republic of Ireland". What is wrong with that? (NB. The BBC Northern Ireland is a national channel.) Mooretwin (talk) 21:07, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Um, I think it's a regional channel? Around 70 per cent of all the BBC's domestic TV and Radio output is made in the English Regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. --HighKing (talk) 00:29, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Since Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland aren't mentioned in the lead, it might be fine to leave it at [[Republic of Ireland|Ireland]]. However, the infobox should definitely be changed as it currently states "Ireland and Northern Ireland" (it should be "Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland", per IMOS). Also, "national" suggests that the Irish nation stops at the border. ~Asarlaí 22:44, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
I've changed the infobox to be in line with WP:IMOS and the main Raidió Teilifís Éireann article. ~Asarlaí 23:53, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Agree. --HighKing (talk) 00:23, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
HighKing, BBC Northern Ireland is considered as one of the BBC "nations", along with Scotland and Wales, as the link indicates. Mooretwin (talk) 09:27, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Asarlai, the fact that Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland aren't mentioned in the lead is irrelevant - the potential remains for confusion. The sentence is currently misleading: RTE2 is not the second-oldest TV channel in Ireland. What is the purpose of the IMOS guideline, if not to be used to avoid ambiguity? This stonewalling is crazy. Mooretwin (talk) 09:27, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
I have to say that the simplest solution would be to remove the phrase. I'm not sure it meets the requirements of WP:LEDE, and is more than adequately covered in History. It is unreferenced, looks like a bit of WP:SYNTH, and is in grave danger of being seen as WP:OR. Just get rid. Fmph (talk) 12:07, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Go for it. Mooretwin (talk) 23:15, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree, just remove it altogether. ~Asarlaí 02:22, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Change name of page to RTE Two HD

The page should be renamed RTE Two HD from October 25th 2012 as RTE TWO SD will cease broadcasting — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nua eire (talkcontribs) 12:11, 22 September 2012‎ (UTC)

Doesn't that only apply to Irish terrestrial television? As far as I know there's no indication that it will cease broadcasting in standard definition on the cable, IPTV and satellite platforms listed in the infobox and it will launch in standard definition on Freeview on 24 October 2012.[1] - Jasmeet_181 (talk) 11:15, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Request to Update Irish Channels Share of Viewing

Hi all, I am looking to update the viewing share for the Irish channels (Virgin Media One, Virgin Media Two, Virgin Media Three, RTÈ One, RTÈ 2, TG4 and EirSport 1) using TAM Nielsen data from 2019. However, I have a Conflict of Interest as I am employed by one of them. I have posted this on all of the relevant pages as I'm hoping to get a consensus to go ahead. 08:59, 4 July 2020 (UTC) DarkerDai (talk)

Do it yourself! 14:19, 6 July 2020 (UTC) 3125A (talk)

Indeed — go for it DarkerDai —- please do!
Also:
Can anyone clear up what day the first broadcast was? The page says the first broadcast was on 6 June of ‘78, but it also looks like it says the first day was on 2 November later that same year... Was the November 2 date the day it began full 24-hour or daily operation? (Making 6 June the first broadcast of any kind, I assume?) Attriti0n1944 (talk) 15:10, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
AFAIK 6 June only refers to test transmissions for TV sales places, the offical launch was 2 Nov 1978,. IrishTV (talk) 19:15, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
