Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai fled Jerusalem, in 68/69 AD, after the bloody Zealot Temple Siege in which the High Priest was slain; and before Vespasian was declared emperor. 40 years prior was 28/29 AD, the time of John the Baptist (Luke 3).
