editI redid a lot of the content in this article.
Does anyone have a citation for the material that makes up the first two paragraphs? Other than the fact that they're named after Rankine, I think most of this material is spurious or false. I don't have much experience with Rankine vortices, so I could be wrong, and I'd love to find some books that discuss them in more detail.
