Ravenscraig steelworks

edit

Pyrotec - I've split out a Ravenscraig steelworks article from the Ravenscraig article. I think it deserves a page all it to itself. I hope this meets with your approval! - Crosbiesmith (talk) 21:44, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, and thanks for your note on my talkpage. I'm more than happy that you have separated the two. Having done work on the General Terminus and Glasgow Harbour Railway and Hunterston Ore Terminal articles sometime age, I wished to link to Colvilles and Ravenscraig but found that neither articles existed. User:Kennedygr has made a very good start in getting Ravenscraig up and going; but my interests don't really stretch beyond its closure. With separate articles it might encourage both to be expanded up to B class articles.Pyrotec (talk)11:03, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to jump into someone elses talk pages, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure this was a good change. Despite the fact you left no link to the new page. I can perhaps see the point of it having its own page, but there is very little info just now. And you took away the only image from Ravenscraig. And there is no link in Ravenscraig_steelworks back to Ravenscraig. Sorry, but this was a useless edit. Perhaps we should discuss things like this (ie. such major edits) on the articles talk page instead? I must be honest, I really dislike this change. Instead of one "Start-Class" article, you have probably split it into two stubs. If the general consensus is to keep it split, then major work is required for both articles to get them looking well. Right now they both look like crap. Sorry for all this on your page Pyrotec, I have copied all this onto the articles talk page, best to continue the conversation there, yes? ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) (secret) 07:46, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Split - Ravenscraig works is notable in its own right. - Crosbiesmith (talk) 18:41, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
On the topic of merging, the Ravenscraig New Town article contains come useful information. Perhaps this could be merged with Ravenscraig? - Crosbiesmith (talk) 18:53, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes.Pyrotec (talk) 19:14, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I would agree with that. Didn't even know about that page... ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) (secret) 07:52, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am somewhat biased to Split, but I still think that you have done a v good job on Ravenscraig. Taking your points one by one. The two articles are currently separate, but there is no reason why the photograph cannot appear in both articles; a link to Ravenscraig can also be put into Ravenscraig steelworks - these are quite minor points. The modified Ravenscraig is still a Start-class article, but returning the photograph would help its presentation. There is still considerable scope for expansion as the main thrust of the article is a discussion of a new era for the site, i.e. the construction of a new town: Ravenscraig; and as I have said elsewhere there is considerable information about the pollution on the site post-steel production. This is valid info for the article even with steel making moved to a seperate article. Ravenscraig steelworks is somewhere between stub and start class; but on the other hand it too could be more than doubled in size, but that will take time and effort.Pyrotec (talk) 18:49, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, thanks again for the points (eg pollution) I have made notes, and will update the page soon. The problem with the steelworking side is, I have no knowledge of it. I'm quite young (18) so i've always known Ravenscraig to be one big grassy derelict mess, with like 5 roundabouts on a straight road... The info I knew was from my grandparents stories, which as you imagine are not really very reliable ;) So unfortunately I won't really be able to do any work on Ravenscraig_steelworks as i know nowt about it. Strange, when i went to school, we learned about corn laws/irish potato famine/highland clearances/immigration/emmigration/WWI/WWII/effects on Germany of WWI and II/scottish wars of independance... but NOTHING of the major economic change less than 10 miles away, which cost 10,000 men and women their jobs. Anyway, back on topic. Fair enough - Split - but as i say, cant contribute to Ravenscraig_steelworks, but will continue with Ravenscraig. ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) (secret) 07:52, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I used to go past it on the train when it was working (and after it had closed - it looked very sad); but I've not seen the site cleared. I did most of those subjects as well, but we also did iron (wrought & cast) and steel making (Bessemer). I assume the current Ravenscraig site includes what was the old Dalzell works, which closed a few years before Ravenscraig? I did have an article on the pollution on the site, got it at a conference on cleaning up old industrial land in the mid 1990s - unfortunately it got dumped about 4 years ago; before I started on wikipedia.Pyrotec (talk) 20:53, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not sure about the Dalziell works now to be honest, there is still a factory there if i remember correctly - actually, look here - http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/241293 gives an example of what it looks like now. Im going to go down and take some photographs soon for this article, just need to get some spare time when its daylight. Should be easier now, still light later on at night. Suppose there is weekends... Did you live nearby? Where have you spread your wings to if you dont mind me asking? ← κεηηε∂γ (talk) (secret) 21:07, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I lived in Paisley, so it was InterCity travel past the site; I moved down south, in Somerset, just before it closed.Pyrotec (talk) 21:28, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
