Question on Merchant Marine service
editWhat's the best way to characterize what Raymond Bailey did in World War II? Did he "serve in the Merchant Marine" or "work as a merchant seaman"?
User:Davidmt62 and I have been discussing the best way to characterize what Raymond Bailey did during World War II. Specifically, is it correct to say that someone "served in the Merchant Marine?"
I have written a sentence to that effect in the article, and added two references:
- In 1938, he decided to try Hollywood again. His luck changed for the better when he actually began getting some bit parts in movies, but after the United States entered World War II he joined the United States Merchant Marine.[1][2]

I have also provided Davidmt62 several links to show that the phrase "served in the Merchant Marine" is quite common:
Davidmt62 is of the view that "he worked as a merchant seaman" is more accurate. He bases this on his more than 20 years of experience as a merchant seaman, and points out that the Merchant Marine is an industry not a military service or government agency.
He also makes these points:
Merchant seaman are considered veterans, and while it's true that some, but by no means all merchant seaman who worked for various shipping companies during WW2, were granted veterans status in the nineteen eighties, this doesn't change the fact that at the time they were civilians working for private companies contracting with the government.
A person who wishes to work as a merchant seaman gets the necessary documents from the Coast Guard in the same way a commercial pilot receives the necessary documents from the FAA, then that person either applies directly to a shipping company or more commonly joins on of the seafaring unions and takes what jobs are on the board.
So, does anyone have an opinion on the best way to characterize what Raymond Bailey did during World War II?
Thanks,
What symptoms of Alzheimer's disease was shown on Beverly Hillbillies and what time segments of which episodes?
editThe page for Raymond Bailey states that he began displaying symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in the final episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies, but no specific examples are given. Neither in any article online making similar claims. I just watched the final 3 episodes of the series and didn't notice anything besides a bit of slurring in a few scenes, which may or may not have been a part of his character's hyper mood. In the very final episode that wasn't happening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.193.254.87 (talk) 04:54, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
