[Untitled]
edit- "The term and the expression "to raise the red flag" come from an element of some letter box construction: a semaphore arm that is raised to indicate to the postman that there is outgoing mail in the letter box."
I doubt this very much. As a commonwealth English speaker at least, "to raise a red flag" means not just "please pay attention", but that "something is very, VERY wrong". I imagine it's more likely to come from the railways, where a red flag was - and is - recognised as an urgent danger signal. FiggyBee 17:32, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Red Pennant
editI seem to recall reading that a red pennant was a warning to a maritime enemy one was about to engage that no quarter would be asked or given. Anyone have anything on this, and should it be included here?

The result of the move request was: not moved. Rough consensus to not move. (closed by non-admin page mover) – MaterialWorks ping me! 10:33, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
– This article is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The current Red flag page should be moved to Red flag (disambiguation). PhotographyEdits (talk) 09:53, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

- Comment: Malformed move request fixed. (The move request formerly due not include what would happen to the disambiguation page Red flag.) Steel1943 (talk) 17:43, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. Nothing shows conclusively that Red flag (idiom) is the PRIMARYTOPIC. Wikinav stats show Red flag (idiom) beating out Red flag (politics) only by 4 percentage points, and the pageviews of both [1] [2] are more or less on par. 〜 Festucalex • talk 19:40, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Support It's not even solely about the idiom, this page seems like a WP:BROADCONCEPT and should be primary as such. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 21:09, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. No primary topic. The political usage is just as notable. WP:BROADCONCEPT does not apply, as these two usages have different derivations. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:56, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose. I agree with Necrothesp, no primary topic, and a literal red flag as a symbol of communism is not the same broad concept as a flag signaling a problem.--Cerebral726 (talk) 15:03, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- Unless you're Ronald Reagan, of course. 〜 Festucalex • talk 04:48, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Ah yes, the obscure WP:THEGIPPER clause probably applies here. Cerebral726 (talk) 12:29, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- Unless you're Ronald Reagan, of course. 〜 Festucalex • talk 04:48, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
