There is some confusion among the sources about whether the school opened in 1916 or 1917. All sources (including county property records, not included as a source) appear to indicate that the building was constructed in 1916. However, the sister of William Anderson, who donated the land, wrote in the 1960s that the school opened its doors in September 1917. The Redland Middle School "About Us" page states that the school was dedicated by Governor Cats (sic) on July 4, 1916. Yet Sidney Johnston Catts did not become governor until January 1917. It seems odd that a school would be built in 1916 yet not open until September of the following year, but given that the inference from the sources is that this was apparently the case, the opening date should remain 1917 until this is clarified.
