History

On 10 November 1915, a tornado went through Great Bend, the Cheyenne Bottoms, Red Wing and Claflin. Writing on 15 November 1915 from Brownell in Ness County, my great grandmother, Sarah Milton writes, "We read in the Post that Red Wing was all gone in that storm, nothing left. It was spelled Radium, a small town of 25 people and supposed it was meant for Red Wing." I have a picture I took in May 1977 that shows a grain elevator so it would seem that as least that much of the town was rebuilt at least once after the storm. My grandparents lived further north in Barton County and used Red Wing as their mailing address until they moved on in 1917.
