Talk:Reed valve

prevents them from opening earlier than the optimum time.

This phrase reads wrong to me. I see no issue with the valve opening at the optimum time.

I guess the issue is that the air pressure driven valve does **not** open at the optimum time, else there would be no advantage to a rotary valved engine...

Don't know enough about two stroke motors to be confident of this however...

How do they work?

edit

Its certainly not obvious from the page as it stands how these devices operate. Anyone know?--SpectrumAnalyser 00:23, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Performance

edit

Given the fact that they operate via air pressure alone, reed valves are not as precise as rotary valves since physical inertia causes them to open later than the optimum time. Manufacturers have attempted to address this in part by creating multi-stage reeds with smaller, more responsive reeds within larger ones that provide more volume later in the cycle.

There should be mention that, though "Less precise" than rotary valves, reed valve motors pretty much totally replaced rotary valve motors by the 90's. A. Graham Bell's "Two Stroke Performance Tuning" mentions this.

I've mentioned this, though without using your reference, hope this was OK. MalcolmMcDonald (talk) 20:51, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pulse Jet Technicality..

edit

The section on pulse jets states that "forward motion" causes the reed valves to open. Actually a pulse jet will run fine while stationary. It is the inertia of the gas leaving the long tailpipe that "sucks" fresh air/fuel in the front. Taken from the (correct) article on pulse jets:

"The inertia of the traveling exhaust gas causes a low pressure in the combustion chamber. This pressure less than the inlet pressure (upstream of the one-way valve), and so the induction phase of the cycle begins."

Dustyattic, I've made some minor changes to the text to reflect your very appropriate comments. I hope I've helped to make it clear.
