First draft

edit

I started this article after a question on the RefDesk. Thanks to those who already (!!!) made improvements. If anyone can tell me how to rearrange the references so that they are listed only once each in the list at the end instead of as footnotes, that would be great. --- Medical geneticist (talk) 20:18, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

You need to give each reference a name and then refer to the named reference. It's probably easier to do than to explain; I'll do it in this article and then you can look at the source to see how it works. - EronTalk 20:43, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, it's done. Basically, the first time you use a reference you include a name in the opening ref tag: <ref name="Foo">[Content of your reference]</ref>. When you want to use the same reference again, you insert a single reference tag with the same name: <ref name="Foo" />.
For this article, I named all the reference with the last name and initials of the first listed author. I named all of them, including the ones only used once, so that you can add additional references to the article later. - EronTalk 20:58, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! That makes sense. I appreciate it. --- Medical geneticist (talk) 21:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
