I think that it is unfounded to suggest that "Most Britons celebrated the storming of the Bastille in 1789, believing that France's monarchy should be curtailed by a more democratic form of government". importance of burke's finances in the american v french revolution positions

burke was profiting directly from the very distant american revolution due to it's effect on specific shipping interests, whereas he had no such financial interests in the french revolution, which was very close to home. it's a lot easier to support a revolution that is far away and that benefits you financially than one that is close to home and may threaten your life. this reality underlying burke's shift in position, relative to his self-interest, should really be a key part of this article.
