3D particle model error
editLooks like in the 3D ball model of the particle there's one hydroxy group missing in the middle, when compared to the ball&stick model and the structural formula. There's only one hydrogen there and no oxygen.--Sasq777 (talk) 14:50, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Role in photosynthesis
editThe enzyme ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCO) catalyzes the reaction between RuBP and carbon dioxide. The product is the highly unstable 6-carbon intermediate known as 3-keto-2-carboxyarabinitol 1,5-bisphosphate. This six-carbon intermediate decays virtually instantaneously into two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA) (see figure). RuBisCO also catalyzes RuBP with oxygen (O2) in a process called photorespiration, a process that is more prevalent at high temperatures. RuBP is also involved in photorespiration, in which it combines with O2 to become 3-PGA + phosphoglycolic acid. In the Calvin Cycle, RuBP is a product of the phosphorylation of ribulose-5-phosphate by ATP.
SUGGESTED EDIT: These two sentences are repetitive. I'd like to make a more concise statement. E.g.: RuBisCO also catalyzes RuBP with oxygen (O2) in a process called photorespiration, a process that is more prevalent at high temperatures. - I cleaned up a triple elegant variation: Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) is an organic substance that is involved in photosynthesis. The anion is a double phosphate ester of the ketose (ketone-containing sugar) called ribulose. Salts of this species can be isolated, but its crucial biological function involves this colourless anion in solution. Elegant variation is confusing in scientific explanation. where they talk about Ribulose-1,5-diphosphate. I searched a bit but couldn't find a straightforward answer. Can someone give a bit of historic oriented explanation to the differences of the terms? --Mindravel (talk) 10:22, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Mindravel: According to this thread on Stackexchange, di should only be used when the phosphate groups are attached to the same carbon atom whereas bis signifies that they are attached to different carbon atoms. As to why earlier sources refer to RuBP as di, I have zero clue. SmartSE (talk) 20:59, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
