The maximum size of SD card that the Rio Forge supports is 2GB (which is more than enough - thats about 60 hours of audiobooks). The Rio Forge player does not support 4GB cards, as it does not support the new SD 2.0 standard. On 2008-09-12, I tried it - purchased a 4GB card, loaded the latest Rio Forge v3.02 developers cut firmware into the device, and tried it with no success. It works beautifully with a 2GB card though (again, thats more than enough - more than 60 hours of audio, about 10 typical audiobooks).
- I've been using a 4GB SD card (an off-brand one purchased from Woot!) for quite some time in two different 512KB Rio Forges with the v3.02 firmware. Your inability to make it work doesn't mean it doesn't work for others. There are 4GB SD cards available based on the original SD standard per the first paragraph of Secure Digital card.
- The published specs for the player say 1GB is the maximum size of SD card supported, because that was the largest size available at the time the player was introduced. -- Foetusized (talk) 04:01, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
SD card capacity & hardware issues
editToday I've added an image of a dark blue Forge showing, on the Storage Info menu, that it is using a 4GB SD card. This might be overkill, I suppose, but there's the proof that a 4.5GB Rio Forge is possible.
I also restored the content about the switch hardware issues, toning down the language a touch. Message boards may not be suitable for article citations, but a Google search will turn up several posts about Forges with broken volume and/or lock switches. Also, Rio Cali Disassembly and Internal Views gives information about how to fix this problem for the Rio Cali, an earlier model with the same hardware issues.
In short, this article should be about the Rio Forge in general, and not limited to your any one person's experiences with the Rio Forge.
By the way, it has been over a year since I bought my off-brand 4GB SD (non-SDHC) card to use in my Forge, but I recall that I had to reformat it with the FAT32 file system before it would work. Your milage may vary -- Foetusized (talk) 03:11, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Player does support 4GB cards
editIt does support 4GB cards. It turns out that my 4GB card was broken - there was nothing wrong with the Forge.
I have just added a mirror link for the latest firmware, and split the discussion about firmware into a separate section.
