This was a very real hoax in the mid 1980s, and searching through newspaper archives I have found two good sources attesting to its verifiability, notability, and longevity in Western Mass as an example of how the rural areas are neglected by the state. However, I cannot find references that attribute the hoax to a UMass professor. Articles as recent as 2001 claim that the originator of the hoax is still unknown.
