editI've seen a few variants on the idea that Clayton tied a piece of cloth to the wheel to count its rotations. Wallace Stegner's The Gathering of Zion (1964) states "He tied a rag on a spoke and all that day walked besides the wheel and counted the rag every time it came around" (page 132). I don't know if this is the origin of that part of the legend, but it may be a contributor. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 21:13, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
