End of Dennard Scaling

edit

What exactly does it mean when people are saying that Dennard Scaling has ended? How is this related to computer clock rates? --NeoUrfahraner (talk) 14:11, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Power density is no longer constant as fabrication process size decreases, leading to increased power usage / reduced performance over what dennard scaling predicts. The primary reason cited for the breakdown is that at small sizes, current leakage poses greater challenges, and also causes the chip to heat up, which creates a threat of thermal runaway and therefore further increases energy costs.[1]--115.64.56.38 (talk) 10:38, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the link. What is still not yet clear to me is the relation of power density and performance. Clearly I see a relation between clock speed and performance, but not the relation between power density and clock speed.
