This man died seemingly very young. Anyone know why? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.86.136.57 (talk) 01:30, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cancer of the face. (No, I don't have a citation, but that is what killed him). MacArthur was a great guy who inspired a generation of younger ecologists who worked with him. He had a way of being supportive of attempts to do theory in ecology, and getting the listener excited about the possibilities. Even though I wasn't an ecologist, and didn't work with him, he was very supportive of me when I visited his department in 1967 and when we met at meetings or during a visit of his to Seattle. His death was very sad, but in his short life he had a major impact on ecology and a considerable impact on evolutionary biology as well. Someone ought to add to this page a list of ecologists who worked with him or co-authored with him -- it would be impressive. Felsenst (talk) 13:14, 3 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
