editthe section about "the facts" reads like an editorial, rather than an encyclopedic entry. we should either cut it down, or remove it; it doesn't really belong here.--87.171.102.1 (talk) 14:00, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Biography
editThe sentence "It can be argued that Howard is the most highly decorated soldier in U.S. military history," doesn't seem accurate. It's hard to find definitive records about individual soldiers' military decorations, but Douglas MacArthur is probably the most highly decorated U.S. soldier ever. Of all the Vietnam veterans, Col Bud Day certainly has more decorations than Col Howard, although one may argue that he is not exactly a soldier but an airman. Perhaps this sentence could be rewritten or deleted? Hildenja 21:14, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
The section sounds like it's taken from a biography including:
- The paragraph describing why Col. Howard didn't get the MOH the first two times since they were spec. ops.
- The paragraph describing the "quandary" of the Vietnam War and how he wasn't "touted" as a national hero by the media
This has probably been copied from a book. ndyguy (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Links
editThere's a "private page" among the links. But clicking on it leads to a tribute site which is accessible to the public. What's "private" about that link? 203.97.110.64 (talk) 23:04, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
14 purple hearts?
editHoward was wounded 14 times but received the Purple Heart only 8 times rather than 14--anybody know why? Also, since 1918, a person can only get the Medal of Honor once (though there were individuals who got it twice before it was limited to a one-time-only award); this may explain why he received the MOH once, though nominated three times. 71.148.53.59 (talk) 19:08, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
- That claim about the Medal of Honor is untrue. An individual can no longer receive more than one Medal of honor for the same action. Howard's nominations involved three separate actions, thus he was eligible for multiple Medals of Honor.74.215.219.209 (talk) 05:58, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Robert L. Howard → Robert Lewis Howard – Potential confusion as middle initial is shared with Robert Lesarian Howard, initial page should be a disambig. Ranze (talk) 07:18, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose. One is known as Robert L. Howard. One is not (and doesn't even have his own article - just a redirect). No confusion here. We only use full names if they were commonly used. In this case, it appears that Howard is commonly referred to using his middle initial. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:24, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose: A disambig page is not necessary when the ambiguity involves only two articles. Please see WP:TWODABS. I just added an {{About}} hatnote to this article, and I think that should be sufficient. —BarrelProof (talk) 20:43, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Most decorated in Vietnam? Try David Hackworth COl US army
editOut of the Awards issued in combat David Hackworth has 2 DSC 10 Silver Stars 8 Bronze Stars with v and 8 Purple hearts. For awards for direct combat that's 28 medals. 2600:1015:A011:BFA0:A8A3:256F:A2F1:582D (talk) 13:34, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
- Howard was nominated for the MoH three times, but policy meant he could only be awarded one MoH. Hackworth never received the MoH. There is no US military criteria of "most decorated", rather its based on views of various writers and commentators. There were several other servicemen more decorated than Hackworth like Joe Hooper (Medal of Honor) and Hugh L. Mills Jr.. Mztourist (talk) 04:20, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
