Overclaiming and Death. It seems widely accepted that Hanson over claimed, (for example on one day he claimed 5, his unit 13, when Japanese in the area record losses of 3). Both Bruce Gamble (in Target Rabaul) and Mark Lardas (in Air Campaign Rabaul 1943-1944) point out that he claimed most victories when he had become separated fromt he rest of the unit and was flying alone, and that his commanding officer went so far as to have him followed in the air to investigate suspect false claims. It seems appropriate to record that his claims were inflated, if not mentioning he was suspected of deliberately falsifying claims. His death was explained at the time as coming while attacking a light house. As Lardas a shown this was war time censorship - he was attacking a Japanese radar site. ospreypublishing.com
