Conflicting info - two different people?

edit

I see here that his years of life are 1743-1824 whereas the current article states 1787–1854. Perhaps we have father and son crossed here? Clearly something needs to be corrected. WilliamKF (talk) 03:01, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nevermind, I now see that that UPenn article is for his father who did similar things and was incorrectly cited by another web page as being the Robert Patterson who sent Jefferson the ciphered letter. WilliamKF (talk) 03:14, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't see how he could have written this letter to Jefferson whilst being an "official at the American Philosophical Society" in 1801 if he was born in 1787 surely it was the Patterson born in 1743? --Praguestepcihld (talk) 08:01, 4 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Robert Patterson - the "Father" (b. 30 May 1743 / d. 22 Jul 1824) was an immigrant from Ireland; Revolutionary War hero and the 4th Director of the US Mint, a position he was given by his friend and colleague Thomas Jefferson, with whom he shared the secret cipher in an 1801 letter. Robert MASKELL Patterson - the "Son" (b. 23 Mar 1878 / d. 3 Sept 1854) is one of the eight children born of Robert Patterson and Amy Hunter Ewing. While the "Son" held similar positions as an instructor and subsequent Director of the US Mint, he was never personally connected to Thomas Jefferson. The entire section on crytology does NOT belong with the Son, Robert MASKELL Patterson but should be a reference to the Father. (Reference Short Biography of Robert M.
