editComments for the Robert Ruark article:
1. Kidogo was not a tracker, he was a gunbearer. 2. Kidogo was indeed a tracker: hunting staff was hired first for their tracking ability, they were then trained as gun bearers, if required. Tracking had to be learned from childhood in the bush, and could not be taught later. So this ability was paramount when selecting hunting help. Bwana dc (talk) 15:03, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
His death
editI'm not certain, but I believe the cause of Ruark's death was never officially made public. He was rushed from his home in Spain to London where he later died.... I recall reading that some sort of organ failure (cirrosis of liver?)is suspected, given that he was an extremely heavy drinker. His family and boyhood were marred by alcoholism in the family. He also smoked a lot. Bottom line: he did not live a healthy/exemplary life as an adult; probably due to earlier influences. Engr105th 21:56, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Robert Ruark/Robert Roark?
editRobert Roark was an actor who appeared in TV and movies, most notably the movie "Mister Roberts" (1955). Some sources have his birth as December 29,1915 in Wilmington, NC, and death on July 1,1965. These dates and birthplace match Robert Ruark's biography exactly.
The images of Roark I have found show more than a passing resemblance to Ruark.
Was there just one man? Or are there two men, remarkably similar names, whose biographies have become mixed up by some sources? Twistlethrop (talk) 04:25, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
- They must be two different men. I've never read or heard ANYTHING of Robt Ruark the author having been an actor...someone has conflated the two, mistaking Ruark's dates as being for Roark...Engr105th (talk) 22:31, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, I looked up Robt Roark on IMDb (Internet Movie Database). His bio has a couple of comments from readers stating that his birth/death dates are incorrect, though no one has fixed the error. The dates do belong to Ruark the author. Also it stated that Roark attended Kentucky Military Institute (Ruark most definitely didn't), and some other details...Summed up: it's two diff men...Engr105th (talk) 16:57, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing that up.Twistlethrop (talk) 18:59, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
