Sir Robert Shirley . 1581 - July 13, 1628

son?

Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers (1650-1717)

The title of Earl Ferrers was created in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1711 for Sir Robert Shirley. It is the senior Earldom in the Peerage of Great Britain.

The Earl holds the subsidiary title of Viscount Tamworth (1711), which is used as a courtesy title by heirs-apparent to the Earldom.

The fourth earl is particularly notable as the last British peer to die a felon's death, in 1760, having murdered his steward.

The family seat is Haddenham Hall in Norfolk.

Surely these are not at all "her native style of dress"? The pistol may also be a reference to an episode where she saw off brigands somewhere. Johnbod (talk) 21:19, 6 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Did Shirley have a recusant background or why was his wife baptised a catholic at the time of marriage, rather than becoming Anglican or Protestant or just remaining Orthodox? Oudeístalk 14:31, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

There were Carmelites in Persia, but probably no Anglican clergy. Strictly speaking, no baptism is necessary for an Othodox going Catholic - for example El Greco never seems to have had a 2nd baptism. Johnbod (talk) 14:49, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
