Collection of sources for improving this article
editThis article is small, considering Roberta Smith's stature. Because Smith is so prolific, the hardest part about improving her page will be the research, because most of the hits are going to be things she has written about others. A quick search of my academic library resources shows 12,000+ results, more than half of which are *by* her. When I look closer at the smaller half, many/most of the items are people like Calvin Tompkins, or Peter Plagens quoting Smith. (Or they are about Bob and Roberta Smith.) Obviously, this all shows how important her work is, but it isn't the kind of material we can use to add to Wikipedia.
- http://observer.com/2011/09/roberta-smith-and-holland-cotter-named-co-chief-art-critics-of-the-new-york-times/ establishes date of promotion to chief critic
- https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/insider/judy-chicago-dinner-part-art-reviews-times.html establishes date she started at NYT.
- https://www.artandeducation.net/classroom/video/66283/roberta-smith-criticism-a-life-sentence intro text has by-line: Orit Gat. Also Carin Kuoni gives an introduction which puts her work in context. I think that can be quoted as well, as a public lecture. As well as Phyllis Braff's longer intro https://www.phyllisbraff.com/
- https://vimeo.com/149403690 Smith was a Marina Kellen French Distinguished Visitor atthe American Academy in Berlin in Spring 2014.
- http://www.americanacademy.de/person/roberta-smith/ better link for AA Berlin. How do we feel about citing this biography?
- http://www.veralistcenter.org/engage/event/177/roberta-smith-criticism-a-life-sentence/ establishes award
- https://news.artnet.com/opinion/kenny-schachter-jerry-saltz-777836 mostly about saltz, but discusses smith. establishes date of marriage.
- https://www.politico.com/media/story/2015/03/the-infinite-spanking-of-jerry-saltz-003797 how saltz and smith met. i worry that covering this too much will reinforce the structural issues of women defined by the men they associate with. maybe the response is to include the same section on both of their pages, just with switched positions/names. Paddy Johnson says "Art critic and founding editor of Art F City Paddy Johnson says Saltz may not be “a real wizard with the pen (Roberta just runs circles around us all),”"

Year of birth issue
editI noticed that this article has two different years of birth 1947 vs 1948, none of which seem to have the citation provided. Adding a note here on the talk page to discuss. Jooojay (talk) 22:56, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
