- ... that Rockwell A. Schnabel was nominated as Ambassador to the European Union instead of Ambassador to Italy after Italian-Americans demanded one of their own be in that position instead? Italian-Americans complained that one of their own wouldn't be representing the US in Rome. Schnabel, who is a Dutch-born entrepreneur with not-insignificant experience in politics and diplomacy, was scratched, even though the Italian government had already formally accepted his appointment.
