Recent controversy
editInformation about recent sex abuse controversies should be backed up with more relevant sources. Also, the article about the diocese may not be the ideal place to insert such content, given that specialized articles such as Sexual abuse scandal in Boston archdiocese are perhaps better suited to handle these types of affairs. - On May 18th, 2007, a Long Island jury found the diocese and a church parish negligent in a case involving a youth minister who repeatedly raped and sodomized teenagers in his care over several years. In one of the few clergy abuse civil cases to make it to trial, the jury awarded the two victims a combined $11.4 million in damages. While finding the Diocese, one of its churches, and a pastor negligent in the hiring and retention of the youth minister, they cleared the defendants of being negligent in the supervision of the minister.

Name
editThe official name of the diocese is the Latin one, with the vernacular being a translation. Therefore, the diocese's full and proper name is Rockville Centre in Long Island, which is a naming convention found in a number of other dioceses (Springfield in Illinois, Lafayette in Louisiana etc.). I propose renaming and moving to reflect this. If that isn't met with consensus, then the name should at least be given in full. Cripipper (talk) 11:29, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
Related?
editBesides being a Roman Catholic Church there is no relation to the Diocese of Ogdensburg. Brainyack813 (talk) 15:45, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
July 2021 Latin Church revision
editAs of July 2021, this article was modified to eliminate the nondescript term "Roman Catholic" in favor of the more precise distinction of "Latin Church" (the sui iuris church) and "Catholic Church" (the denomination). In the case of this diocese, official documentation refers to the diocese primarily as the "Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre." In keeping with common-name preference on this Wiki, the name will read as promoted officially. However, elsewhere in the text, "Roman Catholic" has been substituted. If you believe this edit to be in error or improper, please make the relevant reversion and open discussion on this talk page or my personal talk page. Thank you. ~ Pbritti (talk) 02:56, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
